Review: Duchess (2024 Movie)

Duchess opens on a strong note. The titular heroine, Charlotte Monaghan, is drawn into a glamorous, crime-fueled lifestyle by the charming and dynamic Rob, whose world of high-stakes smuggling pulls her in. The twist? Scarlett proves she’s more than capable of holding her own. Their chemistry feels compelling and electric.

Director Neil Marshall employs a range of stylistic flourishes reminiscent of Guy Ritchie – freeze-frames, bold text captions, and colorful narration in the heroine’s distinctive, deliberately exaggerated Cockney accent, which is as shamelessly over-the-top as Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins.

The performances elevate the film. Charlotte Kirk, though not entirely convincing in the lead, exudes a likable, cartoonish charm. Philip Winchester is effortlessly charismatic as her crime-boss lover, while Sean Pertwee delivers his usual crusty gravitas in a supporting role. Colm Meaney stands out as the heroine’s unscrupulous father, bringing a level of menace rarely seen from him.

Midway, however, Duchess shifts gears. The quirky, underworld romance gradually gives way to a more conventional revenge narrative. While the violence and revenge elements are compelling, the story occasionally suffers from predictability and loose logic. Character nuance from the first half is overshadowed by action-heavy sequences, losing some of the freshness that initially captivated.

Despite its shortcomings, Duchess remains an entertaining ride, full of memorable set pieces and offbeat performances. Fans of wacky, ultra-violent crime thrillers will find it enjoyable and worthwhile, even if it doesn’t fully match the originality of its promising opening.
